In response to a tragic fire that claimed the lives of two Boston City Fire Fighters in August of 2007, the Boston City Council passed an ordinance that requires certification of exhaust cleaners working in commercial kitchens within the City of Boston.

The fatal fire began in the kitchen and spread into the kitchen exhaust system. The fire burned in the exhaust system for more than an hour. Investigation into the fire revealed significant shortcomings in the restaurants exhaust system as well as a failure in proper cleaning and maintenance of the system.

Specifically, the ordinance, which became effective in May of 2009, requires that companies and contractors engaged in the cleaning of commercial kitchen exhaust systems within the City of Boston have at least one person on each work crew have a City of Boston license.
